If you’re a South African and live in South Africa then you will be able to associate with the term ‘load shedding.’ This unwelcome foe has invaded our personal lives and inconvenienced us in many ways recently. We have sadly learnt to accommodate him by reorganizing our lives around his weekly visiting schedules. Technological apps have assisted in helping us not to get caught out by his untimely and eminent attacks and some have even spent additional expenses on things like generators and inverters to ensure that he does not over stay his welcome! The rest of us have surrendered to his advances and have been taken captive in the dark. What more can we do? It is out of our control, right? If anything positive has come out of this experience for me it is that I have been given time to reflect and think. I would like to take this opportunity to share some of my thoughts with you if I may? I promise not to Bible bash you or ask you for money. I would simply like to share some insights that I believe are very relevant to us as South Africans today. The Bible has much to say about the themes of darkness and light.
Whether you are a Christian or not you would have to acknowledge that this world is getting progressively worse by the day. Turn on the radio, glance at the front covers of newspapers or watch the evening news and the evil is there- In your face! Have you ever stopped to consider why though? Why is there so much crime, violence, rape, robberies, corruption, terrorism and murder just to name a few sins? It is beyond normal and beyond control in my opinion. Yet what might appear normal in this world is anything but normal. You see, whether you are a Christian or not, there is another world that exists. The question is not really if it exists but rather how it affects you and I. Unlike Eskom that can cause a temporary blackout in our city or country, this spiritual world causes darkness on a global scale. It has been in existence since God chose to create. This world is unseen by us and filled with activity, just like ours, but by spiritual beings called angels and demons. My purpose in raising the topic of these spiritual beings is to make you aware that there is a war going on in this spiritual world between angels and demons. What is the war over? Us! Our souls! Our eternal destinies! And to complicate matters more, the Bible teaches that we are living in the middle of this war! The Bible calls it ‘this present darkness.’ Listen to what the Apostle Paul wrote regarding this spiritual darkness “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12).
So back to the question “Why is there evil in our world?” One reason is because God has an enemy called Satan or the Devil. Since his exit from heaven with his band of demons, God has given him temporary reign of this present world (2 Corinthians 4:4). Let me be clear- God has given him permission to exercise his powers. He is a created angel (Cherub) and therefore limited in many ways, unlike God. Yet he is to be respected because he is far stronger than us (Jude 1:9; 2 Peter 2:11). The Bible describes him as a roaring lion who seeks to devour his prey (1 Peter 5:8). He is cunning and extremely deceptive (2 Corinthians 11:3, 14). He is clever and has a highly organized army that has been ready since the Garden of Eden to wage war against God and His people. Friends God has laid it on my heart to share His Word with the people in my life and anyone who will listen. We have serious problems in South Africa. I recognize that and I am not oblivious to the great needs of many South Africans. I have highlighted our current electricity crises in particular to point you to an even greater crises going on in the heavenly realms. You might wonder why I have done this. It is because our war is ultimately not against our Government or Eskom or any other human being for that matter- that’s what “flesh and blood” means. Our war is against the Devil! Against unseen spiritual beings called demons. They are seeking to keep people in the dark, through lies (John 8:44), for as long as possible so that they will not come to walk in the light.
God is light and in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). He offers you light in this present darkness to be able to see more clearly in this world and to enjoy that light forever in the life to come. My challenge to you is to recognize this reality in your life and to be careful not to get caught out in the ‘dark’ before it’s too late!
